A paper published online by Nature describes how the Chin lab has used directed evolution to design a ribosome that reads four-letter codons instead of the normal three.
This development represents a big step for the field of synthetic biology, and opens up the possibility for designing orthogonal systems using new genetic codes and unnatural amino acids.
